Questions To Ask

After a significant hit, ask simple questions and pay attention to how quickly and confidently the athlete responds.

Orientation Questions

  • What rink, field, or facility are we at?
  • What team are we playing?
  • What period, inning, quarter, or half is it?
  • What just happened?

Memory Questions

  • Do you remember the hit?
  • Do you remember what happened before the hit?
  • Do you remember what happened after the hit?

Symptom Questions

  • Do you have a headache?
  • Do you feel dizzy?
  • Is your vision blurry?
  • Do you feel sick to your stomach?
  • Do you feel different than normal?

Trust What You See

A player may say they are fine because they want to continue playing. If they seem confused, unsteady, unusually emotional, or slow to respond, take those observations seriously. When in doubt, remove them from play and seek medical assessment.
