5.1.6 Provide examples of caulking and sealant materials.

  • Oil or resin based caulking - exterior use, but is not stable
  • Latex-based caulking - interior use, shrinks slightly over time
  • Butyl Rubber - exterior use on masonry, but shrinks
  • Nitrile Rubber - exterior masonry and metal, shrinks but is durable
  • Neoprene Rubber - concrete and most other surfaces, is paintable and durable
  • Silicone caulking - bonds to glass, metal and ceramics, moisture resistant and durable
  • Polysulfide caulking - bonds to primed surfaces, doesn't shrink and is durable - for sealing flat roofs and asphalt
  • Polyurethane caulking - air sealing except polyethylene
  • Acoustical sealant - air sealing polyethylene vapour barriers
  • Siliconized acrylic caulking - interior air sealing and finish
