  • Extracts heat from inside and dumps it outside; also dehumidifies indoor air
  • To increase rate of heat transfer, phase changes in a refrigerant are forced by compression or expansion
  • Evaporator: Expands the refrigerant, turning it into a gas and drawing heat from the surroundings
  • Condenser: After passing through compressor, refrigerant turns into a liquid and gives off heat
