Outdoor Wedding Tips

An outdoor wedding was my dream, but it almost didn't happen because of all the varying factors. Thank you Indiana weather.

I was a lucky one and got to have my wedding outside, but not everyone is so fortunate. If you're like me and you really want an outdoor wedding, here are some tips to make your outdoor wedding successful.

Have a backup plan. I've been to a few weddings that were outside but didn't have a contingency plan. No matter where you live, and no matter what time of year you have the wedding, weather is unpredictable. We planned that, if it rained, we would have the ceremony in the reception hall and people would just chill at their tables while we gave our vows and took our photos. Your backup plan may not be ideal, but it's better than have to sit in the rain or extreme heat.

Turn your wedding programs into nifty fans. If your wedding is falling on a hot summer day, or even a kind-of-warm day, your guests will appreciate having a sturdy fan to ward off the heat. You can find free templates online just by Googling "wedding program fan template."

Use a sound system. Indoor wedding venues have acoustics, but the great outdoors has no dome to hold in any sound. Borrow or rent or take advantage of the system the venue provides (if it does), but without microphones, most of the guests can't hear what the officiant says.

Consider using a tent for older guests. As they can't take the heat as well as those younger than them, extra shade will be appreciated.

Have plenty of access to bathrooms. If you're using a field or someone's backyard, you may have to rent port-a-potties. Not the most desirable, but people will prefer having bathrooms as opposed to…not.
