Welding Needs

Common Welding Needs in Custom Home Builds

Understanding where welding fits into your build helps you schedule the trade correctly and avoid holding up other crews.

2.1 Steel Posts and I-Beams

Load-bearing steel columns (posts) and horizontal I-beams are the backbone of open-concept custom homes. A mobile welder handles:

  • Fabricating posts and beams to engineering specifications at the shop
  • Delivering and rigging steel to the site
  • On-site fit-up and welding of connections between members
  • Base plate welding at foundation anchor bolts
  • Cap plate welding at beam-to-post interfaces

Pro Tip If your structural engineer hasn't specified column base plate dimensions, ask before concrete is poured. Retrofitting anchor bolt patterns after the slab is set is expensive and time-consuming.

2.2 Beam Stiffeners

Where point loads concentrate on an I-beam web - typically at column bearing points or concentrated load transfer zones - web stiffeners are required by engineering. These are steel plates welded perpendicular to the web on one or both sides to prevent web crippling or buckling.

Your mobile welder will fabricate and weld stiffeners per the engineer's stamped drawings. This is non-negotiable on any permitted structural project.

2.3 Brick Shelf Angles and Exterior Cladding Supports

Many GTA custom homes feature brick, stone, or precast exterior cladding. Where this cladding terminates at upper floors or large window openings, a structural steel angle (brick shelf) must support its weight. Mobile welders:

  • Weld shelf angles to the structural steel frame at specified elevations
  • Install anchor plates for stone cladding systems
  • Fabricate and weld custom brackets for facade systems

2.4 Custom Steel Staircases

Exposed steel staircases - stringers, treads, and guards - are among the most visible welding work on a custom home. They require both structural integrity and clean, precise welds that will be seen by the client every day.

A skilled mobile welder will:

  • Fabricate stringer profiles to architectural drawings
  • Weld tread supports or nosing angles to stringers
  • Install and weld the staircase assembly in place
  • Grind and finish welds on exposed surfaces for a clean appearance

Note For visible welds on interior staircases, specify TIG welding for the cleanest finish. MIG or Stick welds are appropriate for hidden structural connections.

2.5 Guards, Railings, and Balcony Framing

Exterior balconies, rooftop terraces, and interior guard systems all require welded steel framing that meets Ontario Building Code load requirements. Mobile welders fabricate and install:

  • Steel post bases welded to the structural slab or frame
  • Horizontal rail members and picket frames
  • Glass railing frames and standoff bracket systems
  • Juliet balcony guards welded to the building facade

2.6 Swimming Pool Structural Support

Second-floor or rooftop swimming pools are increasingly common in high-end GTA custom homes. The structural steel required to carry pool loads requires specialized welding - typically OWSJ reinforcement, welded beam grids, and waterproofing interface details. Coordinate your mobile welder directly with your structural engineer on these projects.
