Common Welding Needs in Custom Home Builds
The biggest mistake custom home builders make with mobile welding is scheduling it too late. Steel work has upstream dependencies that affect every other trade. Here's how to integrate your welder correctly at each phase.
Phase 1: Design and Engineering (Before Permits)
Engage your mobile welder at the design stage - before permits are submitted - for complex steel elements. Benefits include:
- Early cost estimates for steel fabrication and installation
- Practical input on connection details that simplify on-site work
- Confirmation of anchor bolt patterns for foundation design
- Coordination with your structural engineer on weld specifications
Phase 2: Foundation and Slab (Before Pour)
- Confirm all anchor bolt locations with your welder and engineer before the slab is poured.
- Install embedded plates or sleeves in the slab where required - much cheaper than core drilling later.
- Confirm clearances for any steel columns that will penetrate or sit on the slab.
Phase 3: Structural Steel Erection
This is the primary welding phase. Sequence correctly:

Phase 4: Mid-Construction - Framing and Mechanical Rough-In

- Stair stringers fabricated and installed to keep other trades moving
- Miscellaneous brackets and hangers added as mechanical and electrical rough-in proceeds
Phase 5: Finishing
Final welding work is typically architectural:
- Stair railings and guards installed and finish-welded
- Exposed welds ground and cleaned
- Any field modifications to accommodate final finishes
