About WINN

Launched in 2013, WINN is a 5-year federal initiative with $100M in funding.

WINN is focused on helping SME's commercialize a new technology, product, process or service based in Western Canada.

Features of the initiative:

  • Repayable contributions (loan)
  • Repayable over 6 years
  • Interest free
  • No security/collateral taken
  • Does not take an equity position

Funding Amount?

Up to 50% of eligible project costs with a maximum $3.5M/project and $7.5M to any one organization.

Who's Eligible?

Canadian incorporated for-profit organizations that have:

  • Fewer than 500 employees
  • Been in operation for at least one year
  • Operating facilities located in Western Canada
  • IP ownership/usage rights
  • Viable plan to commercialize a new technology-driven product, service or process within 3 years

How to Apply?

  • Call for proposals process. Applicants will have 30 days to submit their application
  • From there, it is a two stage process:
    • Stage 1: Eligibility & Pre-Screening
    • Stage 2: Detailed Assessment
  • Applicants can anticipate up to 2 intakes per year.

The next intake is planned for Fall 2014.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the Applicant Guide (found online) prior to submitting an online application.


Can Companies Also Apply for SR&ED?

Yes, however it depends on the project because WINN funding is intended to be used for commercialization, not R&D or product development.


For projects that qualify, companies can claim both the company and WINN-funded portions. This is because WINN funding is a repayable loan.
