For a solo trial or benchmark: no. A personal Guides account is enough.
| Account type | When you need it | API key location |
|---|---|---|
| Personal (default) | Solo use, evals, agent notebooks, client pilots you own | Studio → Connect an AI |
| Org portal | Multi-user client workspace, branded hub, billing under an organization | Portal → Settings → Integrations |
When you register on guides.co, you get a personal account automatically. New accounts receive a Notebooks shelf in Studio - that is where agent-created drafts land.
Portals are for organizations that publish guides to members (municipalities, associations, client extranets). You can add a portal later if the pilot becomes a production deployment.
Simulating a client org? If your assignment is register and create a portal, see Guides AI - Testing → Personal library vs portal channel - add doc guides to your portal channel, then use the portal integration key for org-scoped AI tests.
Scope reminder: A personal API key (or ChatGPT App OAuth login) only sees guides on your personal account - not another company's portal unless they invite you or you use their integration key.
