Beginner's Step-by-Step Guide to Playing Poker

You’re not alone – plenty of people want to learn poker, but don’t for whatever reason (intimidated? too old? too young? too much research?). Poker is a worldwide phenomenon – 100 million people play poker – and not just because it’s fun. Children and adults who can play poker acquire skills that help in the game of life too: creating allies, strategic thinking and interpersonal skills.

A recent article on CBS MoneyWatch, “Why Kids Should Play Poker,” said “The well-known benefits of a regular poker game for adults apply to kids as well: cementing friendships, acquiring social skills, developing critical thinking and honing interpretive and analytical skills.” Kids learn to bond with family, strengthen their memories, learn the concept of risk/reward and money management.

Bill Gates won a lot of his Microsoft startup money from all-night poker games at Harvard. He has said: “In poker, a player collects different pieces of information – who’s betting boldly, what cards are showing, what this guy’s pattern of betting and bluffing is – and then crunches all the data together to devise a plan for his own hand. I got pretty good at this kind of information processing.”

I learned poker very young, and afterwards, so I would have someone to play with, I selfishly taught my siblings and the neighborhood kids. I have met many people in my adult life who did not know how to play poker because they were intimidated to learn. I have taught many friends for the same reason I did as a kid - to be able to play. Today, with so much information on the Internet, it's easier for a beginner to find enough to learn to play, but there isn't ONE place that has everything.

This guide does. More than 75 hours compiling, writing and researching dozens of resources went into creating this “Beginner’s Step-by-Step Guide to Playing Poker” to make it the go-to handbook for someone who doesn’t know anything about poker but wants to learn. The writing is straightforward and in simple language catered to the absolute beginner.

Specially created for you, the poker novice, this beginner’s guide features tips, videos, tutorials and simple step-by-step explanations making it easy for you to learn:

  • Playing card suits, cards and values
  • How to shuffle
  • Beginner terminology
  • The rules of poker
  • Hand rankings – what beats what
  • Antes, blinds and betting
  • Strategy for beginners
  • How to play Five Card Draw
  • How to play Texas Hold ’Em

I've been a writer for more than 30 years, with a background in journalism and newswires. I've been playing poker for fun longer than that.I grew up in the days of three network TV stations, long before the Internet where family time was board games and card games. When I was old enough to understand how poker worked, 7 or 8, my dad taught me to play Five Card Draw. I taught my younger siblings so I’d have someone to play with and we’d use the fake money from our Monopoly game for "betting." It wasn’t long before I was selfishly teaching the kids in my neighborhood so I could play. As an adult, someone taught me Texas Hold ’Em at a party. It wasn’t as popular as it is today, but it was a new game and it was fun. And being from Texas … I should be learning the game that originated here, right? Again, I started teaching my friends so I would have people to play with and anytime I met someone who’d never played poker at all (which was often), I always started with the easier Five Card Draw to cover the basics and moved on to the rules of Texas Hold ’Em. Texas Hold ’Em is both simple and complex. You’re about to learn to play poker the same way I did: the basics, the rules, some strategy, Five Card Draw and Texas Hold ’Em. Once we’re done, you’ll have 100 million potential opponents out in the world.

Highly recommend! Very comprehensive guide for those who want to join the "worldwide phenomenon" that is poker--for fun, or profit, or to increase other skills. The author lays out ALL the steps a beginner will need to follow to learn how to play in one well-written and easy to follow handbook: from getting started (and even finding something to use to bet!), to where to play. You will learn the basics like how to bet, how cards are ranked, and terminology. I liked reading about the different cards that are used and the different ways to shuffle--good stuff! If you want one handbook with all the info you need to get started playing poker, this is it!

Fantastic! Going into this review I had wondered if I had invested wisely or not. I had no clue whatsoever on how to play poker, I am always asked by friends if I'd like to join them on poker night. I usually give the excuse that I'm busy or sometimes flat out say I don't know how to play and don't want to learn as I go along and lose. After coming across this guide I definitely feel I got more than my moneys worth! I love the fact that it was so easy to read and understand that I didn't have to go and do more research outside of the guide. In case I did need further instruction the guide provides helpful tools and other supplemental material that further explains things. I came from knowing absolutely nothing to feeling confidant enough to join some friends on poker night, no bluff! ;)

Thanks to Barbie Dunn, I might actually venture away from the penny slots the next time I find myself in a casino! This guide is extremely well-written and makes poker understandable to even a novice like me. I always thought I knew the basics, but I was wrong. There is so much more to know. I appreciate having this guide to refer back to regularly as I gain more confidence in the world of poker. I hope to see more guides written by Barbie. She has an undeniable talent for explaining things in a clear and concise way.

WWBD? What would Barbie do? I’ve been playing poker for years, but I don’t play as often as I’d like. I’ve found this guide to be the perfect resource to review before I go into battle with my friends who play much more often. It’s a quick way to remind myself of the basics and a few great strategies to keep me in the game. It’s almost as good as having Barbie sitting at the table with me.

This guide is absolutely fantastic! I agree in the outset that as a novice poker player, the intimidation of terminology has kept me from wanting to enter a poker game in any casino situation or even a casual among friends circumstance. Am so appreciative of a guide that not only explains the history of the game an inception, but also the tools that enable me to be able to pursue entry to a game I was formerly intimidated by. Thank you for developing this tool and instruction!!!!
